Fergal’s Top Tips for Global Sourcing
Drawing on 25 years of sourcing experience between Western markets and Asian manufacturing, Fergal shares three principles that consistently separate successful sourcing programmes from costly missteps:
1. Treat time as a currency, not just money.
“While money is the obvious currency, time is sometimes a more important currency.”
Delays in sourcing, development or shipping translate directly into lost revenue and missed market windows — especially in fast-paced sectors like consumer technology. Build speed into your supply chain decisions from day one, not as an afterthought when the launch date is at risk.
2. Own your quality plan — don’t outsource accountability.
As importer of record, your business is liable for product issues in your market — not the factory’s. Relying on the factory or a generic third-party inspector to manage your quality and compliance is one of the most common (and most expensive) mistakes new sourcing businesses make. Have your own people, or a partner with a real stake in the outcome, on the ground inspecting product. Match your testing rigour to the product’s risk profile — especially for items with batteries, power or safety implications.
3. Invest in supplier relationships, not just transactions.
“People buy from people. Personal relationships are key to success in business, particularly in Asian cultures.”
Negotiating purely over email or video calls leaves money on the table — suppliers prioritise the buyers they know and trust. Face-to-face meetings, sharing your strategy, and giving suppliers a stake in your journey consistently deliver better pricing, better quality and a more resilient supply chain over the long term.
